Year 4 looking at Dolphins in our Hauraki Gulf

This week, Year Four's moana studies focused on dolphins. After we discussed our prior knowledge, we watched a video on dolphins and  took an online quiz. 

Next, we estimated, then measured with meter rulers the length of the dolphins that live in Aotearoa. Did you know orca' s are the biggest type of dolphin? 

Hector / Maui (1.2-1.7m) 

Dusky (1.6-2m) 

Common / aihe (1.7-2.4m) 

Bottlenose / terehu (2.5-4m) 

Orca (6-7.5m female, 7-9m male)

Lastly, we drew diagrams of the Common Dolphin and wrote all the facts we had learnt about them.

Year Five Travelwise Change Campaigns with AI

 Today Year Five used AI to help create "Change Campaigns".  We want to encourage Wakaaranga tamariki to use active travel to get the school.  

AI is only as good as the information we give it, so we carefully co-constructed our success criteria for an effective change campaign:

- Audience - Wakaaranga tamariki and whanau

Messages:

- Active travel includes walking, biking, scootering and public transport

- Active travel is good for our bodies, our mental health and the environment

After morning we created picture books to share our Travelwise messages with Year Two classes. Next time we are looking forward to sharing our books and completing the Travelwise reflection quiz.

Year 4 explore how to be kaitiaki for our Hauraki Gulf

 Today Year 4 learnt about the plastic problem for our moana.  Soon there will be more plastic in the sea than fish and it doesn't breakdown.  We looked to see if Wakaaranga Year Fours were contributing to the plastic problem by studying our lunchboxes.

Congratulations to the 17/59 tamariki who brought a litterfree lunch to school today from Rooms 13 & 14.  Also congratulations to the 27/61 tamariki who brought a litterfree lunch to school today from Rooms 24 & 23.

We held a prize draw to reward their extra effort.

Next we added up the litter pieces.

Room 14 would be bringing 250 pieces per week.  That's 2500 a term and 10 000 pieces of litter per year!

Room 13 would be bringing 240 pieces of a litter a week. That's 2400 per term and 9 600 pieces of litter per year!

We went on a litter hunt and found that indeed lots of litter was escaping out of our lunchboxes.  

We thought about creating our own change campaign. Some ideas included:

1+ a day campaign

Poster encouraging picking up rubbish

Convince people to bring a litter free lunch with ...being a good role model, having a hui with a presentation, showing free lunch examples, putting up posters, writing a speech and presenting it

We split into groups to create our 'change campaigns".

Tupuna Maunga Trust Visit - Ohuiarangi Planting Day

 🌱💚🐦⛰️Today, Year Five were lucky enough to have a visit from Jenny & Kessa from the Tupuna Maunga Authority #Love Your Maunga.  

We loved hearing about their mahi to help restore our local mountain to a biodiverse forest full of native birds. Have you signed up for the local planting day on Sunday 16th June?

Year Five - The Future We Want To See

 Today Year Five created digital collages that showed the link between active transport and a healthy environment.  Check out our mahi here: THE FUTURE WE WANT TO SEE

Afterwards, we broke into groups and planned a 'Change Campaign' to promote more sustainable behaviour in our community.

Part of our campaign was coming up with a slogan:

Rosie & Cindy - If you're going less than a mile, don't drive walk a while

Bradley - Walk to school to be cool

Mason, James, Gurdaat - Don't be a fool. Walk to School

Jayden, Kendrick, Marley, Lucas -Bike, scoot or walk to school it is really cool 

Yuyang and Jaihao - Walk to school to keep the planet cool

Ricardo and Haoran - Don't make a fuss just hop on the bus

Some children used Suno to create a song for their campaign with AI.  We had to make sure when using AI that we gave it specific information so our songs were aligned with our main message and audience.

Pestfree Cadets Take Action

 For our final Pestfree session with Ethan, the Cadets focused on lizards and taking action. We reviewed what we had learnt and then talked about how we can create lizard friendly gardens at home.

Our gardens included:

- dark damp places for the lizards to hide

- chew cards to check for pests

- native plants

- a water dish

We are going to audit our school garden to see if it has all that our lizards need.

Year 2 Say Haere Ra to the Bees

 Today, Year 2 had their last bee session with Ms Daniel and Ms Everitt.  

What have we learnt as kaitiaki of bees?

- bee anatomy - how are bee bodies adapted to their habitat?

- bee life cycle

- how bees make honey - including taste testing of course!

- bee dance party

- bee maths - tessellating hexagon honeycomb

What actions have we taken to be kaitiaki of the bees?

- planting flowers for the bees

We celebrated all that we've learnt by creating beautiful bee art work, finishing our bee booklets, eating honey crackers and taking seedlings to grow flowers for the bees at home.

Next term we're looking forward starting our native bird inquiry.
