Rooms 1, 3 and 4 Explore Healthy Lunchboxes

Today, Rooms 1, 3 & 4 thought about the right things we need to grow.  We played a game so we could get all the things we need:

- sleep

- love

- healthy food including 5 serves of fruit and vegetables

- exercise

- water

Next we coloured a variety of kai and divided it into everyday healthy lunchbox foods and party food.  Healthy lunchbox kai and water mean we'll have energy to learn and play all day.

Room 1 exercised our minds with some yoga.

It is Olivia's birthday today in Room 2.  She might have some party food to celebrate.  Sugary food is lovely sometimes for special occasions.

Rooms 3 and 4 Learn about eating a Rainbow

Today, Rooms 3 & 4 were learning about "Eating a Rainbow" in Education for Sustainability with Ms Everitt.   We learnt with Fredge and 5+ Aday that our bodies need lots of water and five serves of different coloured fruits and vegetables every day, so we have energy to move and learn.

We fuelled up with water and fresh tangelos from Ms Everitt's tree.

Monika said, "I like that we can plant the seeds"

Yuvika: "It tastes yummy!"
Lucy: "It tastes sweet."
Alex: "It was pretty much yummy!
Zayne: "I had 3 pips in mine"
Ronni: "It tastes really sweet"
Olivia: "Mine had 3 pips, and it was very sweet"
Eden: "It looks similar to an orange, but it is smaller."

We then sorted food cards into different groups. We sorted by colour, shape, size and also into fruits and vegetables.

We brainstormed all the different coloured kai we knew and compared them to Milo the Monster's suggestions. Afterwards, we created our own rainbows of fruits and veggies

Rooms 1 & 2 Eat a Rainbow

Today Rooms 1 & 2 were learning about "Eating a Rainbow" in Education for Sustainability with Ms Daniel.  We fueled up with water and fresh oranges from Ms Everitt's tree, then played master tag. We learnt with Fredge and 5+ Aday that our bodies needs lots of water and five serves of different coloured fruits and vegetables everyday, so we have energy to move and learn.

We brainstormed all the different coloured kai we knew and compared to Milo the Monster's suggestions. Afterwards we created our own rainbows of fruits and veggies and tried roast purple kumara from the school gardens.

Elliot "The liked the crunchy bit on the kumara"

Hazel "The kumara was a bit tough"

Eden "It was mushy and squishy"

Avy "It was yum. I liked the organges too.  I enjoyed playing master tag."

Melissa "The kumara was so good.  It was my first time trying it."

Luna  "The kumara was sticky."

Caden "The kumara was so sweet."

Kasonoi "It was my first time trying kumara.  It tastes like chips."

Mia "It smells like fries."

"Kumara is yum!" Lachie

Next time we are going to learn about why the compost is so important for growing our kai.

Our International Visitors get a Taste of New Zealand

Our international students and their NZ buddies had a fabulous time today experiencing our Education for Sustainability programme.

They visited the orchards, the whare heihei (chicken house),
bee hives (they were all asleep) and we also dug around in our Mara Kai (food garden). The tamariki dug up lots of kumara (Maori sweet potato). We actually think we dug up the world's largest kumara!

Afterwards, we juiced some tangelos from Ms Everitt's tree and ate some kumara, which Ms Daniel had roasted at home. What a delicious way to experience how we care for our planet at Wakaaranga.
