Eco Warriors Campaign

 Our Eco Warriors are wondering how we can encourage ur community to travel safely to school.

Here are their campaign slogan ideas:

"Children Here. Show you Care"

"Kids are around, so slow down"

"Stay slow, let's go"

We're going to work on ways to present our campaign next week.

Travelwise Leaders monitoring our Drivers

 Did you know the speed limit inside a school zone is 30 km/h? 

This morning, our Travelwise Leaders, along with Maggie Hablous from AT, had the opportunity to become road safety champions. They had to monitor and collect real-time speed data outside our school gate.

We used the speed radar gun and recorded the speed of the passing cars. We will analyse the data we collected soon.

Hendrix: "Having the best time of my life!"

Raquel: "It was really fun to use the speed radar. One car recorded 41, which is over the speed limit."

Mia: "I enjoyed recording the speed and getting toots from the cars to support us."

Zoe: "We made up a chant for the passing cars! Beep if you want to save the environment!"

Hannah: "I loved it when the cars honked their horns at our signs."

Abby: "I enjoyed recording all the speeds down."

Sophia: "Checking the cars' speed limit along with holding the sign up high was a highlight for me!"

Madi: "I liked seeing how fast the cars were going and then recording that."

Year 5 Continue their journey into Active Travel

 First, we reviewed with a Bus Stop activity the definitions from the last lesson.

Climate change, fossil fuels, exhaust emissions, air pollution, greenhouse gases.

Then we circled back to this picture...

We re-created the scene showing what an urban community would look like if people changed their behaviours and made good choices in terms of caring for the environment.

We brainstormed what we could put in our pictures...

Maz- we could add electric cars

Anna- put in more trees

Noah- make a safe space for families to socialise

Hunter- make the pond clean and free from rubbish

Kera- make a walking and cycling path

Create- fewer parking spots so more people can cycle, scooter and walk.

Juliet- build a playground for the children

Tom- make the water safe for fish and people to swim in

Nova- I am going to add lots more trees

Muller- I am adding a zebra crossing to make it safer to people to cross

Rachel- I would like to add a river

Aaria- I am going to add a water tank to store water sustainably

Shae-  I am adding a bus stop for people to wait safely in

Tanya - a lifeguard tower at the beach front

Travelwise Leaders, Leading the Way

 Today, our Travelwise Leaders had a visit from Maggie, who works at Auckland Transport. She works closely with Travelwise Leaders in lots of schools in Auckland.

We looked at what makes a good leader. Did you know that all our Travelwise Leaders used an active travel to school today!

We looked at actions we could take this term... Maybe a Big walk to school? or "Look out for us" campaign.

Zara the Zebra Mascot Crossing campaign, or Red Man/ Green Man crossing campaign.

Mia suggested A bike check at school.

We all liked the idea of Red Man/Green Man crossing Campaign.

We are going to book Maggie for a SPEED RAIDAR Activation to measure the speed of the cars outside our school gate.

Year 5 Get Active with Travelwise

Our Year 5 tamariki started our Ready Steady Go programme today.

Firstly, we brainstormed different ways to come to school actively:

scooter, jogging, walking, skipping, park and stride, wheelchair, ferry, train, tram, biking, kayak, bus, carpool. That is just to name a few.

We are going to be learning about what active travel is, how it is good for our bodies, minds and the environment and lastly how we can encourage safe active travel.

After we downloaded the digital student handbook we took a quick quiz to establish our prior knowledge.

Next it was time to complete a cool giant jigsaw puzzle.  We made it a competition:

Room 16 & 17 Girls - 8:15

Room 14 & 15 Boys - 10:43

Lastly, we annotated the puzzle with ways active travel is good for our body and the environment. 

While one group was busy with the puzzle, 

Ms Everitt took the other group out to collect litter waste from our green spaces. 

What wonderful Kaitiaki we are!

That's 4 bucket loads not going out to the ocean! 

Next week is WOW WEEK (Walk and wheel). We'll be learning how to get to school sustainably and safely. If you walk or wheel to school next week, you can enter the prize draw.  GOOD LUCK! 

Travelwise filming with Room 17

 This morning, room 17 were envolved with filming a promotional video for the Travelwise Ready, Steady Go program which we teach here at Wakaaranga in year 5.

Ms Daniel and Ms Everitt were also interviewed.

Such a fabulous experience.

Wednesday activation at the Gate

 Congratulations to the Random Prize Draw Winners from our activation last Wednesday. Everyone who walked, cycled, skipped, scootered, strolled, Park and strided are all champions in our eyes!

Travelwise Leaders Activate!

 

Today the Travelwise Leaders met with Police Officer Matt, Ms Daniel and Helene & Alice from Auckland Transport.  We wanted to  look at how to promote safe healthy travel to and from school.

After introductions we talked about the challenge of getting tamariki out of cars and encouraging parents to drop off safely.  Skilling Place was talked about as an issue for unsafe stopping.

Some ideas we had for actions were:

- Wednesday Challenge

- Safety at the school gate flyers

- holding up signs for five days - broken yellow signs - road safety week in Week 3 - sign up

- posters

- make a video

- skit in whole school assembly

- assembly - class introduction

- meet Mondays at lunchtime

- collaborate with Eco Warriors and Road Patrollers

- road safety week Fancy Feet

- MOE video

Next we went to look at Skilling Place and shoot some video footage.

Year Five Ready Steady Go Session 1

 Today Year Five explored the benefits of active travel.  First, we downloaded a digital workbook from Travelwise and completed a quiz to discover our prior knowledge of how active travel benefits our mental health, physical health and the environment.

Next, we split into teams to complete a giant jigsaw. While the other team was puzzling we read a journal article about active travel and went on a quick litter hunt. 

It was fun to problem-solve together against the clock to create the giant jigsaw.  Afterwards, we annotated our jigsaw with flags to point out all the ways choosing to walk, bike, scooter or use public transport can help us to feel healthy and happy.
