We needed to get a closer look...
We played a game to explore the idea of equality & privilege as outlined in this video:
This is what the tamariki thought:
AT THE FRONT OF THE ROOM ...
Life is sometimes unfair
Even if life isn't fair you have to push through
Life's not fair get used to it
You can choose where you begin in life
You can't get everything you want in life
It was fair because we were allowed to stand up
I have good aim
We tried hard and so we got it in
IN THE MIDDLE
The higher you are the more you succeed and the lower you are the more you fail. If you start off low you'll fail.
People at the back could be trying really hard but the people at the front could be cheating
AT THE BACK
It wasn't fair
I'm bad at throwing
The people at the back have a disadvantage
Maybe the paper didn't even want to get in the bucket
you can't have everything in life
If you have everything you can feel empty. You have to fail and keep trying.
We had a disadvantage and there were things in the way
If you're at the back you have to do a perfect shot so there's a lower chance and if you're at the front it was easy.
A bit like life because people were in our way
How can we help others who aren't as privileged? Mufti for World Vision on Friday, Food Bank at Christmas ...collect foil for survival blankets for homeless - https://www.chippacketproject.org/
Climate change will bring issues of inequality and poverty. How can we make sure we create a healthy sustainable world for all?
Today Year 4 explored and identified needs and wants. We learnt those living in poverty don't have all of their needs met. We're working towards a healthy, sustainable world in which EVERYONE has their needs met. Two ways we identified that Wakaaranga addresses poverty is our annual World Vision Mufti Day this Friday and annual Christmas food drive.
We investigated becoming part of the Chip Packet Project, so homeless people can have survival blankets made with repurposed chip packets.

Today Ethan from Pest Free Howick, visited for the last time, to complete our Year 5 cadetship.
Firstly we applied our new knowledge to come up with ideas to protect our environment.
Our Eco System Protection Design Solutions:
- cameras to protect habitats
- a robot army with laser beams to detect and eliminate pests
- microchips to give native animals scary voices for scaring pests
- fake eggs filled with poison
- a slippery netting over trees
- protected islands with domes
- sound box to scare pests
Next, we set up tracker tunnels to assess which pests are at Wakaaranga. We'll set them out tomorrow.
Lastly, we reflected on our cadetship and gave the local board our feedback.
Thank you Ethan and Pestfree Howick for an amazing experience!
Year 4 Researched different-shaped teapots
