2023 Pestfree Cadetship

31.7.23
Our second session with Ethan today.
We had a closer look at some of the pests that have been
introduced into New Zealand.
They are all affecting our native plants and birds.

We even had a look at their poop (not real)
and track marks so that we could identify them.

7/08/23

Today Ethan from Pest Free Howick, visited for the last time, to complete our Year 5 cadetship.

Firstly we applied our new knowledge to come up with ideas to protect our environment.

Our Eco System Protection  Design Solutions:

 - cameras to protect habitats

- a robot army with laser beams to detect and eliminate pests

- microchips to give native animals scary voices for scaring pests

- fake eggs filled with poison

- a slippery netting over trees

- protected islands with domes

- sound box to scare pests

Next, we set up tracker tunnels to assess which pests are at Wakaaranga.  We'll set them out tomorrow.

Lastly, we reflected on our cadetship and gave the local board our feedback.

Thank you Ethan and Pestfree Howick for an amazing experience!
