Year One - What makes plants grow?

Today, Year One are learning about how plants grow.

We passed around a mystery object.  What is it?

Edison "It was a bean"

What is a bean?

Mckenzie "A type of food that grows and its good for eating"

Shakya "You can cook it"

Edison "A bean is a seed you can eat"

What is a seed?

Peter "When you put a seed from a tree it will grow.  I have apples on my tree"

Kayla-Rae - "A seed grows into a tree"

"I have a lemon tree"

"If you have a watermelon seed and you give it water a watermelon plant will grow"

Niko "I know that they grow into flowers and trees and other stuff"

Janaya "It's something that grows in soil"

Ezra "Some seeds are really big"

What do seeds need to grow?

Kalane Jade "You have to put some water on it and you have to put it under the ground"

Leon "You need  some sun"

We went to the Mara Kai to explore what had been growing. We saw the soil, the hoses for watering and felt the hot sun.

Check out the GIANT carrots that we picked! We took them back to Piwakawaka to peel, chop and EAT. YUM!

Afterwards we wanted to record what we had learnt, so we drew a diagram to show what seeds need to grow.

Lastly we put all the carrot tops and peels into the worm farm to turn into new soil for growing more kai.

Next time we are going to learn about the parts of a plant.  I wonder what veggies we will try next ...
