Waka Eco Warriors Pest Detectives

Inspired by our day out at Eye On Nature, the Eco Warriors became pest detectives today.  We thought about the types of pests that might be eating our chickens' kai. Jacob said "Rats and mice"

Then we used the chew cards kindly provided in our Eye On Nature take home box.  Joshua pushed the non toxic lure into he core flute and Lucas nailed the card on to the chicken coop down low.

We also had tracker tunnels from our Pest Cadetship last year, so we reset those with fresh ink pads and some of the lure.  Next week we'll analyse the results to see if we need to set pest traps. Stay tuned to see our results! Thanks Eye on Nature!

Week 11 UPDATE - no chews or prints

Week 1 Term 2 UPDATE - WE FOUND MOUSE PRINTS IN THE TRACKER TUNNEL!   Next time we will set out traps.

Year One's Special Seeds

Today Year One split into small groups and passed around a mystery object.  What was it? A pebble? A shell? A nut? No it was a bean seed.  We shared our ideas about how we could get the seed to grow:

Sophia "We water it  and I made one at kindy"

Elijah "You have to put it in the ground and put water on it"

Willow "The bean needs some air"

Leon "The seed needs water and sun"

Edison "The seed needs space so the roots don't squash together"

Next we put on our garden gloves & went on a walk to see where we have seeds growing in our Mara Kai and Orchard.

We picked ENORMOUS carrots and showed them to Ms Von.

We also picked apples.

We all got to try giant carrot. Lastly, we drew a picture of Fredge from 5+Aday with all the things that he needs to grow seeds.

Can your tamariki tell you what seeds need to grow?

Year One - What makes plants grow?

Today, Year One are learning about how plants grow.

We passed around a mystery object.  What is it?

Edison "It was a bean"

What is a bean?

Mckenzie "A type of food that grows and its good for eating"

Shakya "You can cook it"

Edison "A bean is a seed you can eat"

What is a seed?

Peter "When you put a seed from a tree it will grow.  I have apples on my tree"

Kayla-Rae - "A seed grows into a tree"

"I have a lemon tree"

"If you have a watermelon seed and you give it water a watermelon plant will grow"

Niko "I know that they grow into flowers and trees and other stuff"

Janaya "It's something that grows in soil"

Ezra "Some seeds are really big"

What do seeds need to grow?

Kalane Jade "You have to put some water on it and you have to put it under the ground"

Leon "You need  some sun"

We went to the Mara Kai to explore what had been growing. We saw the soil, the hoses for watering and felt the hot sun.

Check out the GIANT carrots that we picked! We took them back to Piwakawaka to peel, chop and EAT. YUM!

Afterwards we wanted to record what we had learnt, so we drew a diagram to show what seeds need to grow.

Lastly we put all the carrot tops and peels into the worm farm to turn into new soil for growing more kai.

Next time we are going to learn about the parts of a plant.  I wonder what veggies we will try next ...
