Room 21 Orientation

 Room 21 explored all the wonderful things that we have at Waka 

that make us a green gold enviro school. We are so lucky.

Next, we helped keep our beautiful school clean. What a wonderful place to be.

We brought the litter back to analyse it.

Tiziano- I can't believe somebody threw away their PC award.

Liam- there is even a sock!

Nubia- lots of plastic in there

Josh- there are lots of packets from our lunch boxes

Emily- most of the plastic is ripped into little corners, easy for the wind to pick it up

Charlotte- we could be more careful with our rubbish

Jessica- We have a lunch box with lots of departments

James- I think if you brought a little free lunch that would solve the problem

We divided the rubbish into lunchbox items and not. Hmmm, I wonder how we could do better?

Rooms 4 & 7 Investigate growing food at Wakaaranga

Today Rooms 4&7 had their first sustainability session with Ms Everitt 

and Ms Daniel.  We were learning about how we grow fruits and 

vegetables at Wakaaranga. The tamariki toured our mara, 

watering the plants, and harvested some kai.

Delilah " I saw an apple tree"

Abbie "I saw some carrots growing"

Emelia "I got to pull a carrot out"

Ibaad "It was a biggish, small carrot"

Cooper "My tummy feels so nice"

Alice "The carrot tastes nice and the apple too"

Louis "I learned soil helps the environment"

Ethan "I learnt the carrots are yummy"

Sarina "I like the apple"

Christopher "You need soil and compost and seeds and water to grow a plant".

Next time we are looking forward to planting seedlings in the new Mara Kai by the Art Room.

Growing Kai with Rooms One & Two

 Today Rooms 1 & 2 had their first Sustainability lesson with Ms Everitt and Mrs Daniel.

We're learning how to grow kai. We watered the garden and dug the soil in the mara kai.

Lastly, we got to try the carrots and apples that we picked.

Jackson "The apples tasted like pinepapples and strawberries"

Nico "I like both"

Chenumi "The carrots tasted like broccoli and tomato"

Saphire "The carrots were crunchy"

Kiwi "The carrot was yummy"

Daniel " I like both"

Junxi "The carrots were crunchy"

We're looking forward to planting seeds next time.

Room 13 & 14 find out why Wakaaranga is a GreenGold Enviroschool

 Today Room 13 & 14 reviewed how Wakaaranga is helping to create a sustainable world.  We had lots of fun mapping all the wahi (places) where we work for the environment.  Then we went off on a scavenger hunt all around the school.

We also talked about the choices we can make everyday to help our world:

- litterfree lunches

- walking and biking as much as we can

- composting our food waste

- picking up litter

- watering thirsty plants

Rooms 23 & 24 - What makes Wakaaranga an Enviroschool?

 Today our 4's mapped out all the wonderful features we have at Wakaaranga that make our school a very special enviroschool.

We finished off with a litter hunt as we are all Kaitiaki of our school.

What do you know about bees Year Two?

 

Year Two are kaitiaki for our Waka Bees. Today we visited the bees and then thought about what we already knew about these mighty creatures:

Isabelle - bees like flowers

Leleya - they put the honey onto their legs

Evelyn - they know honey

Nala - when they sting half their body comes out

Collins - bees don't actually want to sting you

Willow - when you touch the stinger it comes off and the bee dies

Henry- bees take nectar back to the hive to feed to the babies

Archer - bees like trees

Lauchlan - bees look at flowers differently to us

Randidu - bees follow the queen bee

Cooper - the sting is poisonous

Dakota - they keep lots of honey in their hive

Riley - baby bees stay in their hive until they get born

Acacia - bees store honey in their hives for winter

Johnnie - wasps kill bees

Ryder - bees are predators

Celine - Bees build hives

Diamond - bees make honey

Brynn - they get the honey from their antenna

Elora - they have a process called pollination

Ruben - their bodies make the honey inside

Elle - bees make honey from flowers.  They suck it up in their mouths and take it back to the hive.

Afterward, we learned about the bee life cycle.

Rooms 8 & 11 took action to look after our bees by, filling up the Bird & Bee Bath in the Senses Garden.
