Yr 2 Bee Mathematicians

Today, we started off with some wonderful Bee Yoga with Cosmic Kids Yoga to calm our minds and warm our bodies.

Next we reviewed what we've already learnt about bees before we discovered what we were up to today; finding out how bees are mathematicians.  Did you know honey bees can make perfect hexagons.  We used popsilce sticks to make our own hexagons and then joined with others to tessellate our hexagons across the floor.

Afterwards we drew a hexagon tessellation in our bee books.  Amazing maths work Year 2!!

We completed our hexagon tessellations in our bee books.

After morning tea we got into groups to brainstorm how we can help our Waka Honey Bees.
Here were some ideas:

Christopher "Give them sugar water"
Robyn "Don't pick the flowers"
Ibaad "Plant more flowers near their hives"
Imogen "Make sure they have a home"
Logan "Go to the shops and buy some flowers and then you can plant them"
William "Plant some flowers"

We decided to take seeds home to grow flowers for the bees.  Mrs Daniel had collected Purple Tansy seeds that she could share.  We carefully made our own paper origami seed packets  and labeled  them with words and a picture of the flowers.  We will wait til spring to plant them.
